Four museums vying for Art Fund Prize
Bath's Roman Baths Museum and the British Museum in London are among the four UK museums and galleries to be shortlisted for the £100,000 Art Fund Prize 2011.
The Polar Museum, Cambridge, and the new Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway are also in the running for the award, after a long list of ten attractions was whittled down. A judging panel chaired by Michael Portillo has determined which four museums would be shortlisted for the Art Fund Prize 2011, which aims to celebrate originality and excellence.
Portillo said: "Choosing a short list was not easy but we are agreed that these four museums and galleries exhibit remarkable innovation and flair. "We hope that the process of touring the long listed museums has illustrated the fine work being done across the UK, and that is in itself, I believe, a useful outcome of the Art Fund Prize."
Meanwhile, five attractions have been shortlisted for the inaugural £10,000 Clore Award for Museum Learning - supported by the Clore Duffield Foundation. Museums Sheffield: Weston Park; Portsmouth's National Museum of the Royal Navy; and South London Gallery are in contention for innovative and high quality learning activities.
The Pitt Rivers Museum and Oxford University Museum of Natural History, Oxford and Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums have also been shortlisted from a long list of 10 sites. Members of the public are now being invited to vote for their favourite attraction until 7 June, with the winners to be announced at Tate Britain on 15 June.
