Free gym passes for Bolton’s unhealthiest
Bolton residents that belong to key risk groups are to receive a helping hand to get fit with the introduction of a local health pass scheme.
Family doctors will provide those in high-risk groups – such as those who need to get fitter as part of an overall health plan and people who have quit smoking – with a health pass which will make them eligible for free taster sessions at local leisure centres.
Smoking cessation specialist at Bolton Primary Care Trust, Gary Bickerstaffe, who has been leading the scheme, said: “People who’ve made the big step of quitting smoking and people who have health problems are often very motivated to improve their overall health and fitness.
“We want to reduce some of the barriers they might face, including the cost and anxiety associated with going to a leisure centre for the first time on their own.”
The pass allows the holder and a partner three free visits to one of seven council-owned health clubs in the course of a week, and then offers discounts to those who want to take up membership at one of the clubs. Details: www.bolton.gov.uk
