French architects propose giant rollercoaster for Battersea Power Station
French architects Atelier Zundel Cristea have created a design proposal for the vacant Battersea Power Station that includes a museum of architecture and a rollercoaster.
The design firms masterplan is the winner of a competition hosted by ArchTriumph to imagine a new Museum of Architecture for London using the power station as its site and inspiration.
The proposal, which come with a £100m price tag, includes plans for a museum of architecture with a rollercoaster wrapped around the outside offering panoramic views of London.
The focus of the design includes pathways that link together a number of spaces for discovery including footpaths traversing courtyards and exhibition rooms.
Atelier Zundel Cristea said the angles and perspectives created by the rail’s pathway, through the movement within and outside of the structure would offer visitors several simultaneous experiences and enhance the enjoyment of displayed works.
“In every museum it is not the exhibition of works that has meaning, but the presence of visitors and their wandering through and exposure to displays of works that stimulate meaning.”
The site is currently owned by Malaysian consortium of S P Setia, Sime Darby and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), who have plans for a mixed-use redevelopment including new homes, offices, shops, restaurants and hotels as well as community, cultural and leisure facilities.
