Funding boost for Derbyshire reserve
Derbyshire Wildlife Trust's (DWT) plans to improve wetland habitats at Erewash Meadows nature reserve near Alfreton have been handed a funding boost.
More than £10,000 has been awarded by Biffaward, which is an environmental fund managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts using landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services. Funding will enable DWT to replace the reserve's sluices to improve water level management, while ditches will be cleared and water vole habitats upgreaded.
New shingle beds are also set to be created in order to encourage birds, such as the little ringed plover and the lapwing to breed at the site. Reserves officer Kate Lemon said: "This funding will enable us to safeguard Erewash Meadows as a haven for many of our declining and vulnerable species."
