Funding boost for Pwllheli sailing centre plans
Plans for the creation of a new £8.3m watersports and outdoor activity centre at Pwllheli have received a funding boost from the Welsh Assembly Government.
The National Sailing Academy and Pwllheli Events Centre scheme is to receive European Regional Development Fund and Targeted Match Fund support. Gwynedd Council is leading the project, which aims to create an internationally-recognised sailing venue capable of hosting competitions at the highest level.
Plans include a new academy building on the Glan Don peninsula, which will incorporate changing rooms; meeting and training rooms; lecture rooms; a restaurant; and a bar. The final design could also include a balcony to provide a spectator viewing area, while additional berths are also earmarked for the site.
Welsh heritage minister Alun Ffred Jones said: "The new facilities will also allow the club to host more events and attract more tourism to the area." Gwynedd Council economy and community portfolio holder Dewi Lewis added: "These plans have been developed following a period of intensive consultation with a variety of groups and organisations."
The council will deliver the scheme in partnership with Pwllheli Sailing Club; the Welsh Assembly Government; North Wales Water Sports; Plas Menai; Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor; and the Welsh Yachting Association.
