Funding for Scottish woodland improvements
More than £1m has been made available by the Scottish Government as part of an ongoing scheme to provide better access to woodlands through the creation and refurbishment of trails.
Dense woodlands will be thinned out, new trees planted and fly-tipping cleared as part of the programme, which aims to encourage more people to visit woodlands across the country. Projects set to receive funding include plans to increase community participation and improve path networks and biodiversity at the Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill Local Nature Reserve in Edinburgh, which has received nearly £160,000.
More than £342,000 has been awarded to North Lanarkshire Council for woodland improvements at Shields Glen, Viewpark woodlands, Colzium-Lennox Estate, Moodiesburn Glen and Strathclyde Park, while the Dunbar Community Woodland Group in East Lothian will net £112,000 to create new natural play areas. East Dunbartonshire Council will receive nearly £127,000 to carry out work on 166 hectares (410 acres) of woodland, including new footpaths and tree maintenance.
Scottish environment minister, Roseanna Cunningham, said: "For a number of years, Forestry Commission Scotland has been working hard to improve the quality of life for many communities through improving access to woodlands in towns and cities. "As a result of this work, Scots have greater access to woodlands on their doorstep. Being able to go for walks or simply just relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of modern day is a real tonic to many."
Funding is being made available through the Woods In and Around Towns Initiative and the Forests for People scheme.
