Further delays for York’s Barbican
The redevelopment of York's Barbican Centre looks to have been delayed again.
Absolute Leisure, which operates the centre, has suffered a number of setbacks over recent years in its plans to redevelop the auditorium and to introduce new bars and restaurants at the front.
A group, calling itself Save Our Barbican (SOB), has fought a long-term campaign protesting over Absolute’s plans to cut back on sporting facilities and convert the centre to facilitate night-time leisure opportunities.
Absolute submitted amended plans to City of York Council in 2006 and originally hoped to begin construction work in February 2007.
However, to this date no work has commenced on site, despite Absolute’s claims that the centre will be completed by the end of summer 2008.
