Future of iconic Hollywood sign secured
The future of the iconic Hollywood sign, which has overlooked Los Angeles, US, since 1923, has been secured following a worldwide fundraising campaign.
A US$900,000 (£591,000) donation from Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner provided the final part of a US$12.5m (£8.2m) package needed to acquire land behind the sign. The 138 acres (55.8 hectares) of land adjacent to the landmark - formerly owned by industrialist Howard Hughes - will now form part of Griffin Park, which is one of the largest municipal parks in the US.
A housing scheme had been mooted for the site before a campaign was launched to acquire the land, which received support from the Walt Disney Company Foundation and NBC Universal.
