GLL launches Jump Start scheme in Tower Hamlets to help residents stay healthy
Out to encourage residents of Tower Hamlets to get active and stay healthy, a new physical activity referral scheme (PARS) - known as 'Jump Start' - was launched at the Whitechapel Leisure Centre on Tuesday, 15 February.
A partnership between GLL, NHS Tower Hamlets and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, 'Jump Start' sees local health professionals refer patients with existing health conditions - such as coronary heart disease, stroke and asthma - as well as those at risk of developing health conditions to attend tailor-made, low cost, personal exercise programmes including circuit training, aqua classes, healthy walks and gym-based sessions.
After a patient is referred to 'Jump Start', a dedicated team of GLL exercise specialists assess the patient on a regular basis and are on hand to offer advice on exercise, diet and healthy lifestyles. All progress is monitored and GLL takes account of current fitness levels and special requirements when devising individual programmes.
Jump Start is available in four leisure centres in Tower Hamlets - Mile End, Tiller, York Hall and Whitechapel Sports centre.
Comments Dr Somen Banerjee, Acting Co-Director of Public Health, "We know many people with medical conditions benefit both mentally and physically from undertaking a programme of physical activity tailored to their individual needs."
Adds Jamie Ross, Acting Corporate Health Manager, from GLL, "GLL is experienced at providing similar programmes in other London boroughs and is very excited by this opportunity to provide the service in Tower Hamlets. We have helped many people to improve their health by participating in a physical activity programme."
"The programme has made me feel good," says Doulat Khan who signed up to Jump Start. "The exercise routine has eased the aches and pains in my body and if my good health continues, I will go to the gym. I am very grateful to the instructor for all the help and advice she has given me". Patients referred to 'Jump Start' will recieve a three month 'free of charge' membership subsidised by NHS Tower Hamlets. On completion of the scheme individuals will be offered a monthly fee at one third of the full membership to the GLL centre (£11.95). A subsidy occurs for a three year period, starting at one third of full membership and increasing in small proportions throughout this time.
