Gatecrasher submits £5m Sheffield plans
Gatecrasher has submitted plans to Sheffield City Council (SCC) for the development of a new £5m flagship club in the city - three years after a previous venue was destroyed by fire.
The proposed 30,000sq ft (2,787sq m) "hyper-club" has been designed to accommodate 2,000 people and would be built in a basement site on Charles Street - near to Gatecrasher's original Arundel Street site. If approved by city planning officials, it is hoped that the new club will be able to open later this year and is set to be designed by Callin Fortis of New York, US-based Big Time Design.
A Phase One drawing has been submitted to the council as part of the operator's planning application, which sets out the the proposed layout of the club to four individual club rooms and a main auditorium for DJs and live music. Gatecrasher managing director Simon Raine said: "Gatecrasher hopes to rise like a phoenix from the ashes. We were devastated at the loss of the Sheffield club in 2007 and have been searching tirelessly for a location so we can return to our spiritual Sheffield home.
"Having worked as part of the community in Sheffield for more than a decade, we are more than aware we need to work in close partnership with the residents, the local authority and police to address any potential issues before they arise."
