Gateshead Bridge tipped as favourite for architecture award
The £17.7m Gateshead Millennium Bridge, is tipped as the favourite for British architecture's top award, the £20,000 Stirling Prize.
Although designed to allow tall ships to pass underneath, the bridge now opens (in just four minutes) three times a week for a public viewing. A win for Gateshead would be an unprecedented double victory for he architects Wilkinson Eyre, who won last year's Stirling Prize with the Magna Centre. Also on the shortlist is the Millennium Wing of the National Gallery of Ireland.
