Gateshead riverside restoration complete
Saltmeadows Riverside in Gateshead has reopened to the public following the completion of a £2m restoration scheme after the site was found to be heavily contaminated in 2005.
Keelman's Way, a long-distance cycleway that forms part of the national cycle network, has been restored to its original riverside route, while the picnic area is now accessible once more following the scheme. Areas of contaminated soil, which is thought to date back to Victorian industries, have been removed as part of the work, while the car park and the Keelman's Way cycle route have been completely tarmaced ito seal the remaining contaminated soil underground.
Gateshead Council's cabinet member responsible for the environment, Michael McNestry, said: "The reopening of the riverside, and the completion of this long and difficult reclamation scheme, means that local people can once more take full advantage of this delightful urban oasis."
