Georgia Aquarium to add shark exhibit
The Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, US, has added a new temporary exhibit called Planet Shark: Predator or Prey.
Billed as "the most comprehensive and innovative out of water shark exhibition", the exhibit will be a stand-alone installation and will complement the existing collection of 77 live sharks, representing 14 different species.
The 12,000sq ft, interactive exhibition will explore some of the unique relationships humans have forged with one of the world's most feared predators.
It will include 10 separate galleries, with content including full-scale shark models cast from real specimens - including an 18-foot Great White shark; a collection of real shark jaws, teeth and fossils; and detailed information on the Great White shark satellite tagging program and other conservation efforts. The installation will be supported by a programme of lectures from shark experts and shark-themed film festivals.
Planet Shark: Predator or Prey is part of the aquarium's newly-formed partnership with Australia-based exhibition designer Grande Exhibitions.
The exhibit will aim to dispel some of the myths attached to sharks and provide visitors a better understanding of the animals. This in mind, somewhat surprisingly exhibits will also include artefacts from the movie Jaws.
A spokesperson for the aquarium said: "The Georgia Aquarium is excited to host the world premiere of this ground-breaking stand alone exhibition that celebrates one of the oceans' most feared, intriguing and complex creatures.
"Planet Shark not only complements our current collection of live sharks, but will also provide our guests with a unique educational perspective on an animal which has reigned over the ocean for more than 450 million years."
