Glasgow Transport Museum project receives further council support
Glasgow City Council has confirmed it has set aside a further £2m to allow the proposed new Glasgow Transport Museum development to proceed to the next stage of procurement via obtaining more detailed plan projections for the site.
The new museum development, which has estimated completion costs of around £40m and is to be situated on the banks of the river Clyde, has not yet reached the final design stage and currently has a provisional completion date of 2007.
Although there has been extended local speculation as to the new museum's appearance following initial work from consultancy company Event Communications, there is currently no fixed design.
According to the council's Policy and Resources committee's recent joint report on the new museum, the final site should aim to create "a world class visitor attraction on the Clyde that will contribute to the regeneration of the river and improve the display of the city's transport and related collections."
Key proposals listed in the joint report included the development of a landmark building of 10,000sq m, which will accommodate approximately 9,000sq m of public and display space, thereby minimising the need for on site storage and workshops and the presentation of the story of Glaswegian transport in the widest possible context.
According to the committee, it was also important to make sure exhibitions in the museum were linked with the external environment in both a visual and physical way, extending to views of the Clyde and location of attractions outside the museum building.
