Glasgow city centre revamp plans approved
Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has given final approval to a £390m regeneration of Glasgow City Centre.
The Buchanan Quarter project includes improvements to the city's George Square and Upper Dundas Street that will be completed before the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
The Royal Concert Hall and Buchanan Street will be upgraded, the Cathedral Street bridge strengthened and access to Queen Street station will be improved.
Glasgow City Council has agreed a £80m Tax Incremental Financing (TIF) scheme which is expected to lever in £310 million in private investment. The TIF scheme allows the local authority to borrow cash against projected rises in business rates in the developed area.
Nicola Sturgeon said: "This development will continue the regeneration of the city centre, improving the public spaces and creating modern, vibrant new facilities that will cement Glasgow?s position as a major international destination for visitors."
