Glasgow Museums Resource Centre (GMRC) is set to reopen on 25 September, following the completion of a multi-million pound refurbishment scheme at the facility.

The unveiling of the new-look centre in Nitshill will enable members of the public to view the majority of the city's extensive museum collection, with approximately one million objects and pieces of artwork housed at the GMRC. Facilities at the GMRC include office accommodation, laboratories, conservation studios, a new art conservation suite and workshops, while artefacts at the centre will be stored in environmentally-controlled, energy efficient pods.

The £12.8m expansion scheme formed part of a wider two-phase GMRC project, with funding provided by Glasgow City Council and Heritage Lottery Fund to help the city's bid for the development of a new £74m Riverside Museum. Reserve collections formerly stored at the Museum of Transport will be stored in the 9,000sq m (96,875sq ft) GMRC, while also providing a range of education and study facilities for visitors and staff.

Lord Provost of Glasgow, Bob Winter, said: "It has been a real privilege to open the second phase of this project and see so many of Glasgow's treasures. Our collection is recognised internationally and now people can enjoy even more of it in this building and online. "Glasgow Museums Resource Centre will play an important part in safeguarding and maintaining the collection for future generations and is also playing a vital role in preparing exhibits for the new Riverside Museum."

The first £7.4m phase of the GMRC project opened in 2003, while a new online tool designed to help people research specific items has also been launched to complement a new reference library and archive facility.
