Glass ban court fees reimbursed to SBPA
The Scottish Beer and Pub Association (SBPA) has been reimbursed with a portion of the legal costs incurred during its battle against a proposed ban on the use of glass in Glasgow’s pubs and clubs.
The SBPA was set to take action in the Court of Session in Edinburgh last June to oppose the blanket ban, but the case was dropped when the Glasgow Licensing Board agreed to amend its policy out of court.
The City of Glasgow Council has reimbursed 80 per cent (£19,015) of the costs incurred by the SBPA.
CEO of the SBPA, Patrick Browne, said: “We’re glad that the matter has now been settled. Last June we welcomed the Board’s decision to significantly amend its policy, making our legal challenge in the Court of Session redundant.
“The industry remains in full support of policies designed to target and tackle the violent thugs who use glass as a weapon, but we believe that the use of plastic bottles or toughened glass is best determined on a premises by premises basis where problems exist.” Details: www.scottishpubs.co.uk
