On 19 October the Victorian Baths at Glenogle Swim Centre in Edinburgh was closed to allow a £5.5m refurbishment project to commence.

The centre, which is being revamped by Edinburgh Leisure in partnership with key funder and partner, City of Edinburgh Council, will reopen in spring 2010 and boast a brand new gym and steam room as well as the upgraded swimming facilities.

City of Edinburgh sports leader Deidre Brock said: "The Glenogle Baths project will upgrade this important and historic local facility, while maintaining its classic Victorian style.__

"It's much more than a restoration project - once complete, the facilities will be better than ever before."__

Keith Jackson, Edinburgh Leisure chief executive, added: "Glenogle will be the last of our much-loved Victorian pools to be brought up to a modern-day standard.

"As with previous refurbishments, the emphasis will be on retaining the beauty and character of that era, while offering our customers state-of-the-art, easy-to-use facilities."

Glenogle is last of Edinburgh's five Victorian pools to undergo a full refurbishment, following Dairy in 1990, Leith Victoria in 1998, Portobello in 1999 and Warrender in 2006.
