Exclusive Wentworth Golf Club lines up £20m improvements
Wentworth Golf Club will plough £20m (US$28.4m, €25.9m) into revamping its course and facility, with improvements earmarked for its tennis, health club and clubhouse facilities.
The Surrey-based club will undertake “extensive work” on its West Course, led by four-time major championship winner and Golf Designer of the Year 2015 Ernie Els. All 18 greens will be re-seeded with creeping bent grass, while the 8th, 11th, 14th, 15th and 16th greens will be completely redesigned.
Across the course, bunkers will be reduced in number from 88 to 65, while the 3rd, 10th and 18th tees will be modernised. Fairway drainage and irrigation systems will be upgraded.
Wentworth chief executive Stephen Gibson said the aim was to make Wentworth Club the world’s premier private golf and country club.
“The West Course was last updated in 2009 and we are very much looking forward to working with Ernie Els Design to make further enhancements,” he added.
A significant chunk of the investment will go towards modernising and refurbishing all of the tennis, fitness and spa facilities, as well as the clubhouse, which will be totally reimagined by Thorp Design. Work will start in Q3 2016 and will commence into 2017.
