Green light for Olympic Stadium review
Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (THFC) and Leyton Orient Football Club (LOFC) have been successful in a bid for a judicial review into the procurement of the Olympic Stadium.
West Ham United Football Club (WHUFC) and Newham Council was named as preferred bidder for the stadium by the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) earlier this year. However, both THFC and LOFC challenged the decision and a ruling by Mr Justice Collins now means that a full judicial review into the decision will commence on 18 October.
It comes days after UK Athletics said it was bidding to host the 2017 IAAF World Athletics Championships, with the Olympic Stadium at the heart of the application. Meanwhile, it has been claimed that THFC had suggested that it would abandon the judicial review application if WHUFC shelved counter claims of illegally obtained information.
A WHUFC spokesperson said: "We confirm the Metropolitan Police's Economic and Specialist Crimes Unit is dealing with the serious matter of a private investigator acting unlawfully, reportedly under instruction by Tottenham Hotspur. "We can confirm that West Ham received a document from Tottenham asking us to give up our claims against them in relation to the above, in return for Tottenham withdrawing their judicial review proceedings. West Ham naturally refused."
In a related development, the OPLC has revealed that an independent probe into its decision-making process regarding the stadium had exonerated employee Dionne Knight. It had been alleged that Knight had access to confidential information relating to the stadium, which had been used to boost WHUFC's bid for the venue.
An OPLC spokesperson said: "[The report found that] there is no evidence to suggest that [Knight] influenced the stadium preferred bidder selection process." Image: ODA
