Green light for new Alton Towers coaster
Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC) in the UK has approved plans for a new rollercoaster ride at Alton Towers theme park to replace the Corkscrew, which was dismantled in November 2008.
Currently known only as 'SW6', the new 20m (65.6ft)-high ride is set to be 2.7m (8.9ft) lower than the Corkscrew and contain a unique element to ensure that it is as iconic as its predecessor, which was the first double-loop coaster in Europe. It is hoped that construction of the rollercoaster can get underway as soon as possible, and it is anticipated that it will be ready to open at the start of the 2010 season.
Mark Kerrigan, Alton Towers head of development, said: "This new attraction will be a more than suitable replacement for the iconic Corkscrew and we hope that it will be attracting new visitors to the resort for many years to come."
