Ground broken on Hepworth development
The Hepworth Wakefield regeneration project is under development to create a vibrant new art gallery and creative centre on Wakefield’s historic waterfront.
The development – designed by David Chipperfield Architects and developed by Laing O’Rourke – will feature Wakefield Art Gallery’s collection of Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures, alongside other pieces of her work donated by her family.
Work by former resident Henry Moore will also be exhibited, alongside pieces by other well known British and European artists.
Nick Hill, project architect, said: “We are delighted to see The Hepworth Wakefield start on site. It is a privilege to be working on what looks likely to become one of Yorkshire's key arts destinations.”
Wakefield Council’s leader, Peter Box, added: “I am sure that it will attract visitors from all over the world. It is a fantastic opportunity for Wakefield.”
Completion in 2009 is anticipated, with the facilities opening to the public in early 2010.
Dan Doherty, director of Laing O’Rourke, added: “We are delighted to be associated with such a prestigious building and excited at the opportunity to play a part in the regeneration on this area.”
