Gujarat Science City on target
The Government of Gujarat, India, is on target with plans for the opening of a brand new science city.
The Gujarat Science City, in Ahmedabad aims to give the scientific and public communities access to the latest technologies and findings.
The city will have a strong interactive slant, with working models demonstrating technology, virtual reality theatres and cyber cafes.
Split into a number of different pavilions, each will take visitors through different aspects of science, including physics, chemistry, communications and technology, attempting to clearly demonstrate everyday applications of theories and principles as well as recent scientific breakthroughs.
The project is being perceived as a major opportunity to promote local and national industry. Union Home Minister A.K Advani said that the project is of great significance to the state and India as a whole: 'The Science City will be a matter of pride for the state, providing a rich blend of science and technology to the people of the state and the nation,
One of the central features of the first phase will be the construction of an IMAX theatre which will complement existing 'edutainment' facilities which include a number of outdoor exhibits as well as a 1,200 capacity amphitheatre which will host live shows and presentations.
Work has already started on the development, but is behind schedule due to an earthquake in the region, but completion is still expected early next year.
