The four finalists for the inaugural £100,000 Gulbenkian Prize for museums and galleries have been announced.

Out of over 100 entries from across the UK, the projects making up the shortlist are: the Clifton Park Museum in Rotherham, for its Collections, Communities and Memories exhibition; the Galleries of Justice, Nottingham, for The National Centre for Citizenship and the Law; Discovery Point, Dundee, for the RRS Discovery Renewal Programme and the Natural History Museum, London, for The Darwin Centre Phase One

The chair of judges, Bamber Gascoigne, said: We were choosing from an excellent and varied longlist but we were looking for museums moving beyond the best of current practise. Imagination, innovation and extending the very concept of the museum - these were our yardsticks.

The winner of the prize-which is administered by The Museum Prize, a charitable company created in 2001 by representatives of the Campaign for Museums, the National Art Collections Fund, the Museums Association and National Heritage - will be announced at a ceremony at the new Fashion and Textile Museum in London on 15 May.

The prize is funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which is supporting it by guaranteeing prize money of £100,000 a year for the next five years. Details: www.gulbenkian.org.uk
