HLF funding boost for historic cinema
A historic cinema in Brighton, East Sussex, which is due to celebrate its 100th anniversary in September, has received a £39,300 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The funding will be used by the University of Brighton to tell the story of the Grade II-listed Duke of York Picturehouse, which has operated as a cinema since first opening in 1910. A range of cinema artefacts held in private and public collections will be brought together as part of a dedicated archive at Hove Museum, while local schools will receive a teaching pack as a case study of how the industry has changed over the years.
Stuart MacLeod, head of HLF South East England, said: "This venerable picture palace has in part survived because of the ongoing support of a loyal community and now volunteers from that community will help create an enduring legacy as a permanent historical record."
