HLF grant for biscuit exhibition
The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant of £33,300 to The Pumphouse Educational Museum in Rotherhithe to create an exhibition about Peek Frean & Company’s Bermondsey biscuit and cake factory.
The factory was a key employer in the area for more than 100 years and invented the Garibaldi and Bourbon biscuits as well as creating a six foot wedding cake for Queen Elizabeth II.
The exhibition will include artefacts, souvenirs and photographs dating back to 1900 as well as recorded interviews with former employees and a ‘smell pod’ so visitors can experience the aromas of the factory.
Sue Bowers, HLF regional manager for London, said: “Peek Frean & Co. played a crucial role in developing Southwark’s unique character; this project will ensure everyone can celebrate the inheritance.”
The museum is now tendering to find a designer, with the exhibition expected to launch in September.
