HOK sports division recognised for sustainability credentials

HOK’s sport and recreation division has been recognised for its sustainability credentials, being nominated for a Sports Humanitarian of the Year award.

The Kansas-based architecture practice finds itself in the Corporate Community Impact Award category of the third edition of the ceremony, which is organised by sports broadcaster ESPN.

Among the achievements it is being recognised for is its design of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, which is the first-ever LEED Platinum professional sports stadium and Nationals Park, the first-ever LEED Silver ballpark.

HOK also worked on the Husky Stadium, which is the only salmon-safe certified stadium in the world.

Salmon-safe structures prevent sediment run-off from construction sites into salmon-inhabited rivers.

Across their stadiums, HOK has saved energy by 18.75 per cent, reduced water consumption by 38.4 per cent and diverted an average of 80 per cent waste from landfills.

HOK will find out if it has won the award on 11 July. The winner will be able to distribute a US$100,000 grant to a qualified charity of their choice.
