Harry Potter station secures HLF funding
A West Highland railway station featured in two Harry Potter films has been handed £195,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) towards work to improve the site as a visitor attraction.
Glenfinnan Station Museum will use the investment to allow visitors to experience the atmosphere of the station during the late Victorian period, while also providing information on the history of the West Highland Line. Many of the station's artefacts - including pieces of furniture, trolleys and original rolling stock - are currently in storage due to the poor condition of the building, but will be put on display following the completion of restoration work.
A manually-operated signal system at the site's signal box will be preserved and converted into a new educational area, boasting an audio-visual studio screening heritage railway film footage. An upland footpath between the station and the Glenfinnan Viaduct will also be upgraded in order to reverse the effects of erosion. Colin McLean, head of HLF Scotland, said: "The rarity of a station like this, complete with so many original features in such a stunning natural setting is a gift to Scotland's tourist industry and one we should treasure and enjoy."
