The digital television switchover is the process of converting the UK's terrestrial television system to digital.

Between now and 2012, analogue channels will be switched off region by region and replaced with free-to-air digital TV and radio services (Freeview). Switchover will extend Freeview coverage to the whole of the UK and free up airwaves for new services, such as ultra-fast wireless broadband and mobile television.

Any TV that hasn't been converted to digital will not be able to receive programmes after the switchover. This means that all BHA members need to ensure that all sets on the premises are converted to ensure your guests are not left with blank screens.

In a recent survey, Digital UK found that only 33 per cent of the UK tourism industry is ready for the digital TV switchover. Jane Ostler, Digital UK's Director of Housing, said: "Eighty-eight per cent of British households now watch digital TV at home and they expect it when they stay at a hotel or guesthouse. Our research shows that with switchover gathering pace, the tourism sector must do more to avoid guests coming downstairs to complain that there really is nothing on TV! "And it's not as difficult as you might think. The vast majority of hotels who've already made the switch have found it easy and say that their guests have been happy with the extended choice offered by digital television."

If your TV services depend on a communal aerial system (a single set of aerials or satellite dish serving multiple TV connection points) then you need to start planning for switchover as some may need to be upgraded due to their age and condition. There are several different types of communal systems which offer you a range of digital options. Digital UK has set up an information line and website for tourism and property managers providing details of when switchover will occur in each region, how to switch, and the likely costs. Letters will also be sent directly to tourism businesses with advice and information.

Visit Digital UK's property managers' website for more information www.digitaluk.co.uk/propertymanagers or call 08458 455 455* *Calls provided by BT charged at up to 2p per minute daytime and 0.5p per minute evenings (plus 6p BT connection charge). Rates may vary for calls from other providers including mobile operators.
