Heart support for Wigan patients
A new scheme to help patients with heart conditions has been launched in the north west.
Wigan Heart Support Group has been created to allow the region’s cardiac patients to better manage their conditions.
A partnership between Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Trust; Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust and Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, the scheme follows a pilot scheme run by the Primary Care Trust and will see patients regularly meet with health professionals, get information and share their experiences.
Consultant Cardiologist at Wigan Infirmary Dr Arya officially launched the Wigan Heart Support Group.
“This support group will bring together patients, carers and health professionals to try and raise awareness of the huge challenge we face in Wigan,” Dr Arya said.
“All of the patients here today can act as ambassadors and messengers to the community in the battle against coronary heart disease; the single biggest killer in Wigan today.
“They will also have a chance to share their thoughts on how we can improve services in Wigan. We have an excellent rehabilitation programme for patients but we must work harder together to tackle the root causes of such high heart disease rates.”
