Hearts race to Murrayfield
Scottish Premier League football club, Hearts and the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) have announced an agreement to share Murrayfield, the national rugby stadium.
Hearts will now attempt to finalise the move by seeking backing from shareholders at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM).
The club will also hope to sell its current home, Tynecastle Stadium, in order to reduce its £17.6m debts.
The news comes only a week after reports suggested that SRU were preparing to leave Murrayfield, Edinburgh, in favour of cheaper land.
A popular rumour was that SRU would relocate in Stirling – near the famous battleground of Bannockburn.
Traditionalists will see this week’s developments as a victory, as many Scottish rugby fans would have opposed the national team leaving the capital.
Murrayfield has hosted international rugby since 1925, while Hearts have played at Tynecastle since 1886. Details: www.heartsfc.co.uk or www.sru.org.uk
