Heritage Centre at Brooklands Racetrack
DaimlerChrysler has submitted a planning application for a Heritage and Technology Centre at Brooklands racetrack in Weybridge, Surrey.
The company says the plan for the 150-acre site, which has been presented to Elmbridge Borough Council, includes conservation initiatives, a 60-acre country park and flood protection measures that are part of its scheme to create a visitor experience for people wanting to learn about the history Mercedes-Benz shares with Brooklands.
Peter O'Halloran, HTC director for DaimlerChrysler UK Retail said: 'If successful, the scheme will provide much needed investment to maintain the historic racetrack and will be of assistance to The Brooklands Museum. Mercedes and Benz were in the first race at Brooklands in 1907, and even set a land speed record here in 1909, so we are well aware of the history and importance of the site.'
The heritage centre will be sited close to the Brooklands Museum and within the motor racing circuit. It will provide an educational resource, display galleries, theatre, and hospitality facilities and driving circuit for demonstrations of Mercedes-Benz cars. It will present the history of Mercedes-Benz and the technological development of motor vehicles.
A decision is expected this April from planners. If permission is granted, work will begin later this year. Details: www.mercedesretail.co.uk
