Heritage Lottery Fund launches strategic plan
By Caroline Wilkinson
A new strategy from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) called Valuing our Heritage: Investing in our Future outlines the HLF’s plans to invest £1bn in UK heritage over the next five years.
Among the proposed changes are a simplified application process, a support and mentoring service to reduce risks in project development and extra help for inexperienced applicants.
Initially online application forms are available for Heritage Grants, Your Heritage and Young Roots programmes from April 2008, with the rest following in July. The process should provide a quicker turnaround for funding assessments.
“It’s important to encourage a broad range of people to take an active part in looking after the UK’s rich legacy and these new ways of applying will make it even easier to approach HLF for support,” explained Dame Liz Forgan, chair of HLF.
HLF will also be requesting that applicants make their projects as green as possible to minimise environmental impact with innovative approaches and practices that use sustainable resources.
Further changes include a new youth participation strategy called Champions of the Future alongside the current Young Roots programme, to engage more young people. There will also be an annual award ceremony in collaboration with Nationwide building society where the public can nominate a local Heritage Hero.
HLF distributed £220m in 2008/09. This will drop to £180m per year thereafter, as money is channelled into the 2012 Olympics.
