Heritage plan unveiled for Edinburgh
A new management plan which outlines how best to conserve and enhance Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site has recently been unveiled.
The Edinburgh World Heritage Trust has developed the inaugural plan to give a new vision for the site and to provide clear direction for how it is maintained, with the aim of attracting as much tourism, business and investment to the city as possible.
Edinburgh Heritage is set to develop research and education programmes to increase the public’s appreciation of the city – which was granted World Heritage status by UNESCO 10 years ago – and it will investigate a number of potential venues for a new visitor centre.
Future plans in association with the City of Literature are likely to involve mobile phone tours that will explore the city’s built and literary heritage.
According to the Edinburgh Visitor Survey, of the 3.2 million UK residents who visited the city between 2001 and 2003, 32 per cent were attracted by the fact it is a historic city, while this was also the main appeal for 51 per cent of overseas visitors. Details: www.ewht.org.uk
