Highland 2007 programme launched
Scotland will kick-off its 12-month celebration of Highland culture – dubbed Highland 2007 – on 12 January with the Highland 2007 Launch.
The first major event – to be attended by First Minister Jack McConnell – will feature a fireworks display and the Inverness Gaelic Choir at Inverness Castle as well as music from the Massed Pipes and Drums of the Highlands at Loch Lomond.
The Lifescan Monster Street Party – immediately following the Launch – will feature Transe Expresse from Marseilles and an aerial ballet performance by The Music of Angels as well as street entertainment.
Both events have been organised by Unique Events, which produces Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebration.
David Williams, chief executive of EventScotland, said: “The launch of Highland 2007 provides a terrific platform for the celebration of Highland culture and for Scotland’s reputation as a premier events destination. Our investment of £1.76m in the year-long celebration will help deliver a programme of events to promote Highland and Scottish culture.”
Cllr Alison Magee, chair of Highland 2007, added: “Highland 2007 represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to raise awareness of our culture across Scotland, the UK and beyond. The exciting programme combines elements of our traditional culture with contemporary influences, as we showcase the cultural importance of the Highlands on a international stage.” Details: www.highland2007.com
