Hollywood Bowl to unveil new shell
The Hollywood Bowl - the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic – is getting ready to unveil its new shell.
The Hollywood Bowl Shell project, undertaken by the County of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, aims to reconstruct the original 1929 shell; creating more space and improving acoustics.
Architects, Hodgetts & Fung Design Associates, were enlisted for the scheme.
Their brief was to preserve the recognisable, 1920s Moderne look of the existing shell, create 30 per cent more stage space and integrate the sound and lighting into the design.
The new design integrates an acoustical canopy within the shell, stopping the lighting and sound from obstructing its clean lines.
The increased space allows a full orchestra to be accommodated, where before a third of the musicians had to sit outside the shell.
The project is due for completion this summer. Details: www.LAPhil.com
