Travelodge has unveiled plans to recruit long-term unemployed people to at least a quarter of new vacancies created by its recently announced expansion plans.

The budget hotel chain is to build 55 new hotels around the UK as part of a £150m investment in coastal locations.

Working with Job Centre Plus, Travelodge will recruit local long-term unemployed in those locations through an initiative called Local Employer Partnership (LEP). It will see the hotel group commit to interviewing applicants who have taken part in a two-week training scheme.

Minister for employment and welfare reform, Stephen Timms, said: "This is an excellent opportunity to rejuvenate some of our most neglected seaside towns as they become increasingly popular holiday destinations.

"LEPs are a great way to tap into local skills and talent to the benefit of whole communities. In June, for the first time since the programme began, more than 1,000 people found work through LEPs in a single week. We want to see that success replicated around the country."

Since the start of the year, Travelodge says it has recruited 165 staff to new hotels in the UK, with 65 per cent of those coming through the LEP programme.

Chrissie Herbert, the director human resources at Travelodge, said: "LEPs are a cost effective way for us to access potential new recruits for our hotels. We have found the scheme to be exceedingly productive, with 65 per cent of jobs at our new hotel openings this year going to people who were out of work."
