GuestInvest, the company which specialises in buy-to-let hotel rooms, is rumoured to be in talks with the Somerset House Trust and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) for the development of the west wing of Somerset House in London as a hotel.
The trust’s 128-year head lease on the Grade 1 listed former palace, issued by the DCSM, has been on sale for the past year. Jones Lang LaSalle, property advisor, has confirmed that it is steering the trust through the sale.
GuestInvest specialises in selling rooms to investors who can use them up to 52 nights a year and receive a rental income for the remaining time.
At the moment the law states that noone is allowed to sleep in Somerset House unless for caretaking or security purposes. Ministers will therefore need to change the terms of the lease if the decision is made to turn the property into a hotel. The use of Somerset House is currently limited to the promotion of arts and culture.
Somerset House has been somewhat of a revolving door over the past few years with the departure of the Gilbert Collection for the Victoria and Albert Museum and the closure of the Hermitage Rooms. It is now due to open the Embankment Galleries on the 24 April 2008 for temporary exhibitions and the former space of the Hermitage Rooms also for temporary exhibitions.
