The UK’s hotel sector was largely unaffected by the continuously wet weather during June.

According to PKF Hotel Consultancy, room rates and occupancy levels grew steady across the country during the month, with London hotels seeing a 1.4 per cent rise (to 87.9 per cent) in occupancy compared with June 2006 (86.7 per cent).

Outside London, occupancy levels reached 77.3 per cent – an 1.9 per cent rise on June 2006.

However, the sector could still suffer from the effects of the floods caused by the extreme weather, as people are preparing for their traditional August holidays.

Robert Barnard, partner at PKF, said: “It is heartening to see that the attempted terrorist attacks in London and Glasgow and the major flooding at the end of June did not effect the month’s figures.

“However, I suspect the second spell of severe flooding the UK has recently experienced will take its toll on regional hotels.

“Hoteliers will be affected not only due to actual flooding, but also as a result of the knock on effect across much of the country’s roads which will have halted many families’ holiday plans.”
