IHG launches London training academy
InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has unveiled its newest Hospitality Training Academy in London, which is to offer a programme developed in partnership with Newham College.
Local people will have the opportunity to benefit from relevant industry training and practical work experience at a hotel across one of the group's brands at the IHG Academy.
The six-month course will combine the Hospitality Skills Diploma NVQ with four weeks of work experience, which will lead to the award of a Hospitality Level 2 Diploma upon completion.
Students will be able to apply for entry level vacancies across the IHG estate, which includes properties operated under the Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza brands among others.
It is one of 42 IHG Academy programmes running around the world. More than 15,000 are currently employed by IHG in the UK, with 24 per cent between 18- and 24-years-old.
The group is now looking to expand the number of people it employs in the UK and said it will make nearly 3,000 new roles available over the coming three years.
It is expected more than 1,100 jobs will be created across IHG's 275 UK properties during the first year, with two new hotels due to open ahead of the London 2012 Games.
IHG chief executive Richard Solomons said: "We're pleased to be working with our hotel owners to create jobs and training opportunities in the UK at this time.
"The IHG Academy allows us to join with local education bodies in the UK and around the world to provide real-life skills and enhance employment prospects for local people."
