Indonesia plans to build 111-storey tower
Not content to fall behind its neighbouring countries in the race to build the world's tallest skyscrapers, Indonesia is planning to construct a US$2bn (£1,27bn €1,49bn) tower in Jakarta's Sudirman Central Business District.
Designed by Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart Architects (SRSSA), the tower - to be called Signature Tower - will have a height of 638m (2,093 ft) encompassing 111 storeys. The project includes a 300-room luxury hotel occupying 25 levels, office space, a conference centre and a luxury retail development.
Commenting on the design, SRSSA, said the tower celebrated the Indonesian spirit through the reinforcement of the date of the country's independence - 17 August 1945. "Visible during the day through the use of highly polished stainless-steel, 17 leaves grow and blossom upward through the shaft of the tower. At the crown, these 17 leaves are bound together by eight louvre grill elements, culminating to embrace a single 45m (147 ft) spire," said SRSSA.
Thornton Tomasettii is providing structural engineering services for the tower, as it is located within one of the most active seismic zones in the world.
At present construction is set to begin next year and be completed by 2020.
