Plans have been announced for the construction of a new 70,000sq m (753,474sq ft) indoor skiing attraction in Bålsta, Sweden, which will become one of the country's tallest buildings.

Designs for the new Skipark 360º complex have been drawn up by Berg Arkitektkontor, the Swedish branch of Aarhus, Denmark-based C F Møller Architects.

Work on the scheme, which is set to cost around SEK1.5-2bn (£142-190m, EUR166-221m, US$227-302m), is expected to commence in late 2013 or early 2014.

Available for use by both elite and amateur skiers, the 135m (443ft)-tall facility will encase a 700m (2,297sq ft) downhill slop and will meet the requirements for hosting the World Cup.

Facilities will also include a 3.5km (2.2-mile) cross-country skiing tunnel; a biathlon arena; a bandy and figure skating area; ice hockey provision; and a snow park for snowboarding.

According to the company behind the development, it is intended that Skipark 360º will help guarantee skiing facilities despite a recent reduction in snowfall over the last couple of years.

Restaurants; a spa; a hotel; and conference facilities are also proposed, while environmentally-friendly measures will also be incorporated into the building.

A spokesperson for C F Møller Architects said: "The building has a striking appearance, with a simplified silhouette that emphasizes the Swedish landscape of forest and lakes.

"It will be one of Sweden's largest structures and will possess a visual tension in the vast building's few support points, which taper downwards and meet the forest floor at an angle."
