InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland to open Q4 2018
InterContinental Hotels Group’s long-awaited adventurous hotel, which will sit in a 328ft (100m)-deep quarry in the Sheshan Mountain Range in Shanghai, China, is finally due to open this year.
The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland has been designed by JADE+QA, led by architect and former Atkins employee Martin Jochman, and developed by the Shanghai Shimao Group.
It has a convoluted backstory that dates back to 2006 and has faced various setbacks since its original conception, however, the project has seen improvements herein since 2014.
The 18-storey hotel, which has two above-ground floors and 16 below, including two underwater floors, will open in the fourth quarter of 2018.
The hotel was originally due to open in 2010 and its original design was shortlisted for an award at the World Architecture Festival in 2009.
Reaching 61,000sq m, the hotel will offer 336 guest rooms and suites and will provide guests with stunning views of the waterfalls and cliffs that surround it.
