Jewellery museum expands
The Museum of the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham has undergone a £330,000 revamp which has added more than 753sq ft (70sq m) of new exhibition space to the attraction.
New facilities at the museum, which first opened in 1992, include a new permanent gallery dedicated to telling the history of jewellery production, an interactive gallery, tea room and courtyard.
Funding for the project was provided by Renaissance in the Regions (£130,000), Big City Plan Initiatives (£110,000), Department for Culture, Media and Sport (£70,000) and Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery revenue funding (£20,000).
The museum is based around the historic workshops of the Smith & Pepper jewellery manufacturing firm which was founded in 1899 and ceased trading in 1981.
The museum was recently voted by Trip Advisor as one of Europe's top three free attractions, above world famous attractions - such as Notre Dame Cathedral and Westminster Abbey.
