Kirklees scheme relieves restrictions on parents in pools
Kirklees Active Leisure has come up with an innovative approach to its restrictive child pool admissions policy.
The trust, which manages all Kirklees Council-owned pools and sports centres, is piloting a scheme at Scisset Baths following parental concerns that guidelines on the supervision of children in the pool were too restrictive.
According to the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management’s (ISRM) guidelines, one adult can accompany only one child under the age of four years old and only two children between four and nine years old in a main pool.
Parents said the rules were too constricting and prevented them from taking all their children swimming together.
In response, the trust has cordoned off a corner of the shallow end of the pool for young swimmers, where under the ISRM guidelines an adult can accompany up to three children under nine years old.
The trust said the pilot has been meet with been approval by parents and it is considering rolling the scheme out its other sites.
