LCC to withdraw leisure centre crèches
Leeds City Council (LCC) has confirmed that crèche facilities at six city leisure centres are to be axed next month due to a fall in demand and rising costs.
Current provision at East Leeds; Kippax; Rothwell; Aireborough; Pudsey; and Scott Hall will be ended on 12 November, with only 7,264 children using the crèches in the last year. The local authority said the figure equated to less than three per hour across all six sites and was unsustainable, with the closure plans set to save £60,000 a year.
LCC chief recreation officer Richard Mond said: "We have reluctantly had little choice but to make this difficult decision to end creche provision in our leisure centres due to the decline in numbers of children using the service and high cost which has made it unsustainable."
