LOCOG announces 2012 testing programme
Details of a comprehensive sports testing programme that will form part of preparations for the London 2012 Games has been unveiled by organisers.
Three different types of events have been included in the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games' (LOCOG) new schedule. International invitational events; international federation events; and international events that are organised by national governing bodies are planned ahead of the Games.
The first two events will be held on 30 May; an invitational marathon - created and delivered by LOCOG - and the 2011 UK Athletics 20km Race Walking Championships. Ticketed test events will include the Hadleigh Farm International mountain biking in Essex (31 July) and the FIVB Beach Volleyball International in London (9-14 August).
Venues including the Olympic Park Basketball Arena, Wembley Arena; Hyde Park; Lord's Cricket Ground; and ExCeL are also slated to host test events. Some events will form part of UK Sport's World Class Events Programme, including the modern pentathlon at Greenwich Park/Crystal Palace and rowing at Eton Dorney.
LOCOG chair Sebastian Coe said: "The invaluable experience we gain through our testing programme means we can "road-test" all our operational plans."
