Last days of dying swan
Worcester's Swan Theatre closes this month after failing to persuade Worcester City Council to restore its full funding to the theatre.
The council's announcement that it would withdraw nearly two-thirds of its annual funding for the theatre prompted the Swan's board of directors to launch a campaign to save the theatre. This included collecting 13,000 signatures and meeting senior members of the council to discuss future plans and solve the theatre's short-term financial problems.
The plans, however, failed to meet with approval and the directors say they have no other option but to close the theatre permanently, leaving the council to decide what to do with the building. In a statement the board said: 'No regional theatre can survive today without the active and wholehearted support of its locally elected council, without which Arts Council funding is not available, and the present administration for the Worcester City Council has made it abundantly clear that it is not interested in providing such support for the Swan Theatre.'
