Leeds council mulls over leisure plans
Leeds City Council (LCC) has said that it is yet to decide on the future of a number of leisure centres across the city which have been earmarked for closure.
Up to six facilities could be shut as part of LCC's vision for the city's leisure provision, which was outlined in August last year. The council's plans include the development of a network of quality, affordable and sustainable sites. The council's executive will discuss three deputations made to the full council from local residents' groups on 14 January regarding the potential closure of the South Leeds sports centre, Garforth leisure centre and the swimming pool at Middleton leisure centre.
However, a decision is not expected until later year when a comprehensive report will be presented to LCC's executive to consider the vision's proposals. Plans include replacing facilities at Kippax, Garforth, East Leeds and Fearnville leisure centres with two 'well being' centre, while also closing the pool at Middleton and shutting South Leeds once the new Morley is open.
The council is also looking to provide investment to update and improve facilities and activities at Bramley Baths and Aireborough, Pudsey, Scott Hall, Kirkstall, Rothwell and Wetherby leisure centres.
