A new £30.6m wellbeing centre in Leeds and a £15m leisure, health and social care facility in Sandwell are among four schemes to be given the green light by the government.

The Department of Health has announced financial support for the private finance initiative (PFI) projects, which aim to provide community social care and health facilities. Plans for Holt Park Active Living Centre are being overseen by Leeds City Council (LCC) through the local education partnership and contractor Interserve Project Services.

Mentor - a partnership between GHM Rock Townsend and FaulknerBrowns - are behind the designs of the facility, which will boast a 25m swimming pool and teaching pool. A hydrotherapy pool; a Bodyline gym; a large activity hall; multi-activity rooms; hubs for older people and those with learning difficulties; and a studio are also proposed.

In Sandwell, the £15m Portway Lifestyle Centre will be built on the site of Oldbury Leisure Centre and will be a centre of excellence for disabled and able-bodied people. Due to open in early 2013, the complex will include a four-court sports hall; a hydrotherapy pool; a café; a sensory garden; a climbing wall; a dance studio; and a fitness suite.

A full-size artificial grass pitch for senior, junior and five-a-side football is also proposed, as well as a GP surgery. Sandwell Leisure Trust will run the centre and is working with Sandwell Council; Sandwell Primary Care Trust and Sandwell Local Improvement Trust to deliver the project.

Care services minister Paul Burstow said: "These ambitious schemes include plans to build bridges between health and social care. "This is key to developing services that fit around peoples lives and deliver personalised care and support."
